Athletics

June 10, 2021
Athleticism is the art of overcoming the performance of the adversaries in races, jumps or throws.

This sport includes an extensive variety of events, divided in races, jumps, throws and combined events. Many experts consider this to be the oldest organized sport in the world.

ATHLETICS IN THE XII SOUTH AMERICAN GAMES ASUNCION 2022

Track Events:
The athletics track of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee is an oval of 400 meters, this space is of great transcendence being the first in the whole country of counting the certification of the International Athletics Federation. It is valid to approve international brands.

The program for track competition groups sprint races, half and long distance runs. In distances that go from 100m to 10.000m, hurdle races and obstacles, as well as post races of 4x100m and 4x400m.

Most of the competitions depend on the number of competitors starting with the series, the fastest athletes or teams (relays) or whoever meet the requirements of qualification advance to the semifinals, and then the finals.

Field Events:
Formed by throwing events: Disc, hammer, javelin and shot put; and the jump events: long, triple, high and with pole. Unlike the track events, each athlete has their turn, and don't compete at the same time in the jumping or throwing events. The qualification is determined by the height or distance that it reaches.

This type of competition starts with a round of qualification, in which the best get to the final.

Street Events (Marathon - March)
The olympic marathon and march events take place in the public road, with spectators aligned in the route to cheer the athletes.

Marathon
The marathon event in the first Modern Olympic games had around 40km (25 miles) of longitude, approximately the distance of Marathon to Athens. The standard distance (42,195km /26 miles, 385 yards) was established by the IAAF in 1921, directly from the duration of the race in London 1908.

We know marathon as a competition of resistance of athletics in which men and women must complete a run of 42km and 195m.

March
The march is distinguished in the races in which one foot must always be in contact with the ground, Also, the one cannot be bent from the moment in which the front foot makes contact with the ground until the vertical position. The march was carried out as a track event in a field of 3500m in the London Games 1908, and has been done in roads ever since Los Angeles 1932.

Between the first and second day the following events will take place:

Heptathlon
Day 1: 100 meters with hurdles, high jump, weight throw, 200 meters.
Day 2: Long jump, javelin throw, 800 meters.
The decathlon for men consists of 10 events (four races, three throws and three jumps), it takes place in two consecutive days, following an established order.

Decathlon
Day 1: 100 meters, long jump, weight throw, high jump, 400 meters.
Day 2: 110 meters with hurdles, disc throw, pole vault, javelin throw, 1,500 meters.
The competitors win points on their performance in each event, according to the scoring tables that determine how many points is worth the performance. The general winner is the athlete with the most points.

The two events are designed to cover the whole spectrum of events in athletics during two days, including sprint races, medium and long distance races in track, as well as jump and throwing competitions.
