Skateboarding How do you compete and what are the rules?

November 04, 2021

The emblematic sport of urban culture will be presented for the first time in a South American Games and as it was in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, it promises to be quite a show.

In skateboarding, the skater is free to choose which parts of the track to tackle and which tricks to perform. Even when executing the same tricks, the smoothness of the performance can depend largely on the speed achieved. While speed is an important element, points will be awarded for degree of difficulty and originality.

Judges will also take into account overall fluidity, timing, stability and the extent to which skaters are able to create the sensation of being suspended in the air.

As the name implies, the street mode refers to the street, so it takes place on a straight course that mimics the urban landscape: stairs, railings, curbs, park benches, walls and elevations.

Skaters compete individually and have the freedom to use every space in the enclosure to demonstrate their tricks and skills with the board: jump, turn, slide down the iron axes and exhibit their entire technical repertoire with dynamic and attractive movements.

The score they receive takes into account the following: degree of difficulty of the tricks, height, speed, originality, execution and the composition of the moves.

The skaters' stances: stance, regular stance, goofy foot, main strance and switch stance will award different scores for their degree of difficulty. Likewise, the tricks: ollie, flip the deck, flip parallel, flip length-wise, will also give different amounts of points.
