Olympism, principles and values

December 18, 2020

“Olympism is a philosophy of life, which exalts and combines in a harmonious whole the qualities of the body, the will and the spirit. By associating sport with culture and education, Olympism aims to create a lifestyle based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example, social responsibility and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles ”(Olympic Charter , Fundamental Principles of Olympism, Article 1).

The fundamental principles of Olympism inscribed in the Charter govern the Olympic Movement at the individual and organizational level.

The principles of Olympism

  • Non-discrimination: the Olympic Movement strives to guarantee sports practice without any type of discrimination.
  • Sustainable development: the Olympic Movement organizes and carries out programs that take into account sustainable economic, social and environmental development.
  • Humanism: the activities of the Olympic Movement place the human being at the center of their concerns, so that sports practice remains a human right.
  • Universality: sport belongs to everyone. In all its decisions and initiatives, the Olympic Movement takes into account the universal impact that sport can have on individuals and on society.
  • Solidarity: the Olympic Movement is committed to developing programs that, together, provide a relevant and complex social response to the issues that fall within its competence.
  • Relationship between sport, education and culture: The Olympic Movement is committed to promoting a spirit of Olympism based on the convergence between sport, culture and education.

The Olympic values:

  • Excellence: according to the Olympic ideal, this value consists of giving the best of oneself, whether in competition or in everyday life. It is not just about winning, but about participating, advancing in the achievement of your personal goals, doing your best on a daily basis and taking advantage of the healthy association of a strong body, will and spirit.
  • Friendship: the Olympic Movement fosters bonds of union and mutual understanding between people. Friendship designates the construction of a better and peaceful world thanks to solidarity, team spirit, joy and optimism in sport. The Olympic Games inspire people to overcome political, economic, sexual, ethnic or religious differences and to make friends despite these differences. For athletes, this value means establishing lasting bonds with their teammates and with their opponents.
  • Respect: This value represents a principle that should guide all participants in the Olympic programs. Respect refers to yourself and your body, others, the rules and the environment. It is based on the attitude of fair play that athletes should adopt and their commitment to fight against doping.
