Wrestling

June 15, 2021

Olympic wrestling is a combat sport where each athlete tries to take down the rival with holds and protection techniques. Athletes compete in a circular mattress with a diameter of 9 meters, with two periods that last three minutes and breaks of 30 seconds.

To achieve victory, the fighter must maintain two shoulders of its opponent in the mattress for one second, after which the combat finishes. This is called a fall or pin.

If during the combat none of the fighters manages to take down the other, the decision is based on the points granted when putting the opponent in disadvantage.

In greco roman wrestling, combat can end when there is a difference of eight points. In freestyle wrestling, of ten.

The essence of both styles is the same: no team and no clothes pulling, two athletes try to press both shoulders of the rival on the mattress. The Greco roman wrestlers only use the upper body and the arms, while freestyle wrestlers can use any part of the body.

Depending on the act of the wrestler, one, two, four or five points can be granted, for example: By moving the opponent outside the 9 meters circle; one point granted. Two points if the wrestler manages to make the opponent touch the mattress with the back; four points for knocking down the rival while they are one foot; and five if they knock down the rival with a big throw.

Combats are extremely competitive even in the last seconds, since athletes can throw spectacular attacks and projections.
