Canoeing is a sport that is practiced on a boat driven by one, two, or four people, using a single bladed paddle.
Historically, the canoe was a simple transport, and a vehicle for hunting and fishing. The name canoe origins back to arahuacas tongue and was used to call a boat which doesn’t differ its bow and stern.
Canoeing (Sprint)
Canoeing sprint is one of the most demanding sports disciplines, in which all participants must row on water distances of 200, 500, and 1,000 meters, where they test their strength and intensity as athletes.
It takes place in lanes limited by buoys in a straight line.
Slalom Canoeing
In Slalom Canoeing the athletes must row at great speeds in circuits of rough waters -natural rivers or artificial canals-, rocks, jumps and whirlpools.
One can compete in a closed cabin kayak using a double bladed paddle; or being on the knees in a closed cabin canoe, using a single bladed paddle that helps going through gates.
In the run, 18 gates are located with suspended sticks in strategic points of the current; having contact with one of these gates means being penalized, and the run must be completed in the least amount of time possible.
